As part of the Mobile Networks department, our Roaming & Fraud team ensures the highest standards in network quality, security, and compliance, especially in the global realm of mobile telecommunications. You’ll join a multidisciplinary team of 9 senior engineers with expertise in roaming and fraud prevention. We pride ourselves on a 24/7 support mindset and work with international partners to deliver seamless mobile services.
Our team is committed to collaboration, with a hybrid work schedule that includes two office days per week in Rotterdam, a location conveniently accessible by public transport. At KPN, you’ll find an environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement, with a focus on developing new technologies like 5GSA and outbound roaming.

Job Description:

As a DevOps Engineer (Roaming & Fraud) at KPN, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the operational excellence of our global mobile network. You’ll focus on maintaining and optimizing our roaming services, preventing fraud, and providing our customers with a reliable and secure experience abroad. Your work will involve balancing operational support with development, including the automation of tasks and implementing smart solutions for efficiency.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating with both internal teams and external international partners to ensure smooth integration and service delivery.
  • Leading innovation initiatives, such as the deployment of new technologies (e.g., 5G, VoLTE) and enhancing fraud detection mechanisms.
  • Acting as a point of contact for technical environments, systems, infrastructures, and security protocols.
  • Handling complex incidents, often under time pressure, and ensuring high customer satisfaction.
  • Managing and optimizing the Roaming platform, including configuration, monitoring, and resolving incidents.
  • Participating in a rotating on-call schedule, providing 24/7 support for critical issues.

You will thrive in this role if you are analytical, proactive, and driven by results, with the ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate across teams.
Qualifications:
To be successful as a DevOps Engineer (Roaming & Fraud), you should have:

  • Strong experience with mobile networks, particularly in roaming and fraud prevention technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of protocols such as SS7, Diameter, SIP, INAP, and IP.
  • Proficiency with Linux/Unix systems and familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Tekelec, Radcom, Datamon).
  • Fluency in English is essential, as it's the main language within the team.
  • The ability to work independently and take initiative, with a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation (once every five/Six weeks).
  • A collaborative spirit and an Agile/DevOps mindset, with the ability to adapt and grow in a dynamic environment.

This position offers the opportunity to work at the heart of technological advancement in telecommunications, with a focus on security, innovation, and operational excellence. You’ll be part of a diverse, supportive team, contributing to the next wave of mobile network innovation.

The Mobile Core is the heart of the mobile network, enabling all voice and data services based on customer subscriptions. It manages interfaces with international roaming partners, including incident handling, testing, configuration, and monitoring of services such as VoLTE and 4G calling. The team focuses mainly on roaming, while fraud detection (e.g., SMS fraud) is a smaller priority. Operations include incident analysis, partner coordination, and configuration tasks, supported by a 6-person on-call duty rotation.

The role is approximately 70% operations and 30% development (configuration and scripting in Python, working with HLR/HSS, PCRF, IPN, and the Roaming AntiFraud Platform). Key challenges include ensuring seamless inbound/outbound roaming traffic (voice and data) on the KPN network. Collaboration with KPN Wholesale and IoT/M2M partners is crucial.

Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Strong English communication skills
  • Solid knowledge of mobile networks / mobile core (HLR/HSS, SS7, Diameter protocols)
  • Roaming experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with network protocols
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duties
  • Ability to work independently
